Juliu Horvath

Juliu Horvath, 1942, Hungarian, was born and raised in Romania, but he considers himself a "universal being". The Juliu Horvath Method®, as it was formerly known, was developed after his personal struggle with chronic pain and injury. He danced leading roles with the Romanian State Ballet and escaped from the "iron curtain' during a tour in Europe. After spending six months in a refugee camp, he was granted political asylum by the United States. He moved to New York City. He has danced with the prestigious New York City Opera and toured with ballet icons Margot Fonteyn and Jacques d'Amboise. He then became a soloist with the Houston Ballet. His dance career ended when he tore his Achilles tendon and injured several discs in his back.

Attracted to yoga since childhood, Juliu Horvath began to develop his own form of yoga to recover from his injuries. During this period of intense self-study, he developed his method. Originally is was called Yoga for Dancers and since then has developed into GYROKINESIS® exercises. He then returned to NYC and began teaching his system in the dance community. In 1982 he opened his first studio, named White Cloud .

Juliu dreamed of a machine that would help dancers develop a better dance technique. His creative energy led him to develop the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®, as we know it nowadays. This system has evolved almost 30 years since then and Juliu is still improving and extending it. The basic unit, the Pulley Tower Combination, is an elegant unit made of wood and various pulleys and weights. It improves the articulation of spine and joints, strength and suppleness and contributes to spherical and three-dimensional awareness of the body. Today, people of all ages and all walks of life benefit from his system. The Gyrotonic Expansion System works for anyone who wants to develop strength, flexibility and coordination. It is now found in rehabilitation centers, dance studios, sports training and fitness centers around the world.

"The octopus, the monkey and the cat are my basic models because they can move in any direction at any given time with strength and control because they have no restrictions."
